- The anterior one is known as the palatoglossal arch, and the posterior one is known as the palatopharyngeal arch.
- Each palatoglossal arch runs downwards, laterally and forwards, from the soft palate to the side of the tongue.
- Once the bolus reaches the palatoglossal arch of the oropharynx, the pharyngeal phase, which is reflex and involuntary, then begins.
- Intra-orally, there may be swelling and erythema ( redness ) or the anterior tonsillar pillar ( the Palatoglossal arch ) and deviation of the uvula to the unaffected side.
- They are located on the sides at the back of the tongue, just in front of the palatoglossal arch of the receptors of the gustatory sense, are scattered over the mucous membrane of their surface.
